Long before Jesus was born, God’s people groaned with weariness in their longing for a savior. At times, it seemed all was lost. But every time, God met them in their longing and pointed them toward the One who was to come.

A Rescuer who would free them from their oppression.
A Shepherd who would comfort them in their grief.
A King who would set all things right in this world.
The Son of God who would come to be God with us.

This year, Christmas will be different for many of us. It may be tinged with the sorrow of loss or of loneliness. It may be a reminder of the weariness we have carried this year.

And yet, there is a thrill of hope.

By the light of faith, we are led to celebrate the birth of the One who, in all our trials, was born to be our friend. The One who knows our need and is no stranger to our weakness. The Author of love, who urges us to love one another as brothers and sisters. The One who breaks the chains that bind us and frees us from the weight of oppression.

For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Still today, God invites us into that same longing for the One who is to come again. Join us the four Sundays of Advent as we look at how the birth of Christ turns our weariness into rejoicing!
